Tracking traffic from Google Ads aka Adwords

Your default Google Ads account.

If you want to track traffic from Google Ads and you don't want to manually utm-tag all of your ads so that they are also recognizable in journy.io, we hereby offer you a great way to avoid manual tagging each campaign and ad.

Within AdWords, you can use ValueTrack and custom parameters along with a tracking template to automatically generate a tagged URL with all of the information you need. The basic idea starts with understanding the sequence of scope within Google Ads. Items from a lower scope level can overwrite parameters set in a higher scope level. The levels are:

Account Settings ↪ Campaign ↪ Ad Group ↪ Ad (↪ Ad Extension ↪ Keyword ↪ Dynamic Ad Level)

Tracking templates at the account, campaign, or ad group level must include a ValueTrack parameter that inserts your final URL {lpurl}. The remainder of the ValueTrack parameters are free to choose, yet since journy.io supports standard utm parameters, these are the ones you will have to integrate. The values associated with the utm tracking will be done automatically, or through custom variables.

We recommend inserting following tracking template on the highest level (Account Setting):

{lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_medium={ifsearch:cpc}{ifcontent:display}&utm_campaign={_campaign}&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={_content}
Once your ad is clicked, these (custom and automatic) parameters will be insert into your final URL.

So, in short, here's what we are going to do:
We are going to set up a general template for UTM tracking on account level, with _campaign and _content as custom variables.
We are going to fill in the _campaign custom variables on campaign level (and also pre-fill a fall-back _content custom variable)
We are going to fill in the _content custom variables on ad group and/or ad level

Setting up your account settings for utm tracking.

Log into your Google Ads account and go to the All Campaigns menu.
